With the rise of AI in healthcare, many chiropractors are asking:
Can I rely on software alone to read my digital X-rays?
The short answer: Not yet — and not if you want to stay compliant, protect your license, and maximize reimbursement.
Here’s why software alone doesn’t replace a board-certified radiologist — and how the best solutions combine automation with expert interpretation.
AI Tools Are Evolving — But They’re Not Independent Diagnosticians
Modern imaging software can now assist with:
- View detection
- Exposure correction
- Annotation tools
- Basic pattern recognition
But these tools do not meet the legal or clinical standards for diagnostic interpretation — especially in personal injury, Medicare, or insurance-involved cases. They can support your workflow, but they are not a substitute for a certified read. In fact, the future will likely NEVER (in the next decade or so) allow a radiology read to be only performed by AI, a human will have to sign off on the report for verification and liability.
Do Chiropractors Need Radiology Reports from a DACBR?
For some cases, most definitely a YES. If you want to avoid the time involved with creating legally required radiology reports, it certainly makes sense. The task of following your state guidelines and legal requirement to create a radiology report on any image you order, then you should use a DACBR to create your reports for you; OR, if you simply want a second-opinion read on select cases that you have a question on a potential clinically relevant finding observed on an image (ex. Tumor/Compression Fracture), then YES, use a DACBR for that second opinion; OR, if you simply want a second-opinion on types of cases that may involve legal or specialist referral scenarios, then using a DACBR makes sense.
Why DACBRs matter:
- Board-certified by the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology
- Meet documentation requirements for PI attorneys and state boards when you don’t have the time or want verification of suspected pathology.
- Provide protection against liability exposure and have peace of mind
- Offer expert insight on anomalies/findings that you may miss or mislabel
Even AI-enhanced systems still require human oversight for final interpretation.
